A Domain Name is NOT a website
A Domain Name is like a street address, it tells people where to find you. Like a street address, most people will choose to build a website (house) and have email (a mailbox) but neither of these are required. You could choose to have nothing there, no website, no email, but still hold a Domain Name (street address) which can you use later or sell.
Think of it like this:
- The internet is the road
- A Domain Name is where you 'live' on that road -> domain name registration
- A website is the house at that address -> to build a website, you need web hosting
- Email is the mailbox at that address -> to have an email address, you need an email service
Registering a domain name is the first step.
Website (Web Hosting)
If you want a website, you need to buy web hosting (space to build your house) and then build your website (house) in that space. Usually people employ a web designer to build a website, but you can also do it yourself using a range of online tools.
It is recommended that you also purchase a SSL certificate for your website. This provides a secure connection between your website and anyone viewing it. Think of it like someone coming to your address and having a conversation with you in your garden, SSL prevents anyone else from listening to that conversation.
Email Service
If you want email (a mailbox) you need to buy one or more email addresses, this is an email service. This service provides a way to send, receive and store email when it arrives. Some web hosting packages include email, some do not. You can buy as many different email addresses for your Domain Name(s) as you need.
